A few days ago, Yahoo increased the storage for their free email accounts from 6 megs to 100 megs. Paid accounts who previously had 100 megs were upgraded to 2 gigs. The email interface also got a facelift. Expect Hotmail to follow with similar changes any time now.
This was done to compete with Gmail, coming soon from Google ,which will offer 1 gig of free storage for every account. Sounds like a good move, right?
Well leave it up to the morons at Yahoo to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. What could have been a good PR / market share retention move has backfired horribly. I dunno if it's just me, but the "New / Improved" Yahoo Mail is really pissing me off. The performance is abysmal. It just plain sucks ass.
I subscribe to a mailing list on my Yahoo account which usually generates about 100 emails a day. Previously, it was quite easy to use Yahoo mail for this because zipping through 100 messages, skimming them, deleting the ones I didn't want to read, was a quick and painless thing. But now, simply deleting a message is a horror show. When the Delete button works at ALL it takes a good 5-10 seconds to delete a single message. 10 seconds x 100 messages = ~15 minutes that I could be doing something other than fuming about how badly I hate Yahoo and their ineptness.
And that's when the Delete button actually works. On about 50% of the messages, the Delete and Reply buttons will not work at all, no matter what you do. Click and wait. Click, click, click, wait some more. Neither work. But click the "Next message" button and it will immediately take you to the next message. Hit the "previous message" button, and you'll be back where you started and usually the Delete / Reply buttons will work now.
What the FUCK is that about?
How long has email been around? How hard can this shit be to figure out? Why in God's name would they release a product with these kind of very basic, elementary type-1 flaws? Not to mention the horrible performance problems?
To you, Yahoo, I give a sincere, heart-felt single finger salute.
Give me back my 6 megs of storage and good performance and I'll be happy.
