A Perfect Circle - Thirteenth Step

Perfect Circle has released a new album titled "Thirteenth Step".

It is a departure from their earlier work, which some called Tool Lite. This is more like Tool meets Depeche Mode and they go to a David Bowie concert together. You'll hear other reviewers probably say the album is "more atmospheric" than their first work, which is music critic code for "there aren't many straight-up hard-driving tracks."

While it is true that there aren't many hammering tracks, this CD is really a work of art, not just for a heavy rock band but for any recording artist.

A very good analogy for the band itself, the CD is greater than the sum of its tracks, just as the band is more than the sum of its members. While each of members of APC is a super-star in their regular bands, they create something truly spectacular together. The CD has moments of true brilliance on tracks such as "Blue' and "The Noose", but the one that will stick in your mind is "The Nurse who Loved Me." It has been a while since a track has creeped me out as much as this one does, but not in a "omg that's fucking over the top" sorta way, it is more of a "wow, i really understand dysfunction and fuckedupness" sorta way.

Fans wanting more shithammer Tool-like rock may not be thrilled, but this CD is a great step forward for APC. One listen to the tight harmonies in the chrous of "Pet" and you'll agree.

4.5 / 5 stars, imho.
