Stupid Oracle Documentation

Being an Oracle DBA, I get the pleasure of reading some very interesting product docmentation, evidently written by people who have a strong aversion to clear, concise English.

Today's example:

Oracle 8i Utilities Release 2 (8.1.6) A76955-02

DBVERIFY is an external command-line utility that performs a physical
data structure integrity check on an offline database. It can be used against backup files and online files (or pieces offiles).

?!

Do the files have to be offline or not? Your guess is as good as mine. Just another bonus to the Oracle DBA life-- creative documentation interpretation!

5:00 AM? Wtf?

I had to bring a friend to the airport for an obscenely early flight today. I ended up sleeping through 10 minutes of my cell phone's alarm and was on an already-right schedule. After all, who wants to get up at 4:15 AM rather than 4:30 AM to give yourself that little bit of extra cushion, right? I'm in the shower and thinking to myself, yeah I'm 10 minutes late but it shouldn't be a big deal. Traffic won't be bad at 5:00 AM. After all, who is on the road at 5:00 AM other than duck hunters and Krispy Kreme delivery people? Since it was a weekday, I though I could count on the hunting crowd to be somewhat muted in number---but boy was I wrong. I can't explain it, but it was bumper-to-bumper on I-10 with pickup trucks pulling boats. The rest of the morning was uneventful, but an interstate filled with pickup tricks pulling boats before sun-up on a weekday was just too strange not to mention.
